After checking in and lunch at the lodge, we set off on foot, about 3 km, towards Hua Khắt, a Hmong village resting on the hillside. The fresh air smells of damp earth; the houses, built entirely of wood, are simple and sturdy, in the shade of tall trees.

Language may divide, but smiles don't: villagers gladly share their daily life. Further on, the terraces wind like silk ribbons. The trail then crosses a pine forest, where birds sing and squirrels leap.

Horseshoe-shaped terraces at sunset

Option 1

The rice terrace paradise of Mù Cang Chải

At 8:30, after breakfast, the car drives you 12 km to La Pan Tan. After about 2 h 30 of walking, you reach the large round terrace, the symbol of Mù Cang Chải, like a golden tray among the mountains.

The car then continues for 7 km, between rice fields lining both sides of the road. Lunch at a local restaurant, with the flavours of the highlands.

In the afternoon, a steep 1.8 km trail (45 minutes to 1 hour) leads to the heart of the horseshoe-shaped terraces, the ideal spot to watch the sunset. If time allows, we continue 2 km to a Hmong village perched on the slope, then a bamboo forest worthy of a historical film.

Back to the car, back to the lodge: dinner by the fire, looking through the day's photos.

The rocky ridge of the Dinosaur's Back

Option 2

Up the Dinosaur's Back

After breakfast and a coffee at the lodge, the car drops you at the start of the trail. You enter a calm, sparsely inhabited landscape, with an isolated house here and there. Along the way: a bamboo forest reminiscent of historical films, then a simple, beautiful Hmong village whose people greet you with a smile.

Seen from afar, the terraces look like a work composed by hand over hundreds of years. At the Dinosaur's Back, rain or shine, the panorama never disappoints. Picnic on the spot, facing the landscape.

We then walk down into the valley. After about 2 hours of walking, the car and driver wait to take you back to the lodge, followed by dinner at the restaurant.

After about 2 hours, you reach the villages where the Hmong live their simple lives. Language can be a barrier, but the villagers are welcoming and gladly open their doors. Leaving the village, the valley of rice terraces appears: a space sculpted by the hands of artists, where people and nature live in harmony.

The season of water mirrors: the first rains fill the terraces, and the mountain becomes a mosaic of mirrors reflecting the sky.

September – October

The golden season: the main harvest. The whole valley is draped in gold, the ideal time for hiking and photography.
